Unlike hovering over someone or being forceful with a customer, the greet and leave will make the customer feel appreciated and recognized without putting any stress on them. There are two main factors that can kill a shopping experience for anyone and those are feeling like the staff doesn't notice you and doesn't wish to help you, and the second is being pestered by a greedy salesman. Simply greeting them and leaving will allow them to seek you out if they need help but not drive them off out of annoyance. The greet and leave is one of the most effective sales techniques. A second de-facto standard when it comes to sales techniques is not recommending anything. While it's true customers often times ask for help that doesn't mean they want your opinion on anything. They often times simply want to know what something does or where it's at. When a salesman recommends any product it automatically makes the consumer suspicious, especially if the product just happens to be the most expensive of its type. When you're helping a customer the best sales technique is to simply inform them. Ask a couple questions as to what they're looking for and instead of recommending a product out right, just start listing off the features and attributes, good or bad, to them. The trick is to simply explain the products you would have recommended instead of telling them what you would pick. This comes off as much less shady and still gets your point across. This sales technique is a win-win situation. Sales techniques can be helpful hints or a set of skills that are learned on the job.
