Ineffective Sales StrategiesFor every good sales strategy out there, there are a hundred poor ones. Being a good salesman is like an art, not only does it take experience to become good at it; it takes a focused and concentrated mind. Being able to come up with sales strategies for all types of customers is something every good salesman can do. But how does one deduce what is an ineffective sales strategy is and what tried and true bad strategies are there? Being able to know the most basic of ineffective sales strategies will help keep any salesman from blowing a sale at the last minute and keep them from learning some nasty habits. There are really two main situations where a salesman can mess up. The first is when they are dealing with a customer initially. This is the time a salesman will want to greet them and inquire what they are in need of. Truly ineffective sales strategies dictate that this is the time when a salesman should be aggressive and cut to the chase. In reality this is the time to be mellow and let the customer have control. Coming on too strong and giving off the vibe that you're simply here to sell something to them and push them out the door is a big no-no. Good sales strategies will have you sit back and let the customer have complete control. This will give the customer the feeling that you're helpful and simply another resource for them to use. As long as you don't push or prod you will make a sale, just don't force it. The second area where salespeople often times employ ineffective sales strategies is during closing. When contracts are being signed and details are being ironed out, this is one of the easiest times to blow a sale. Ineffective sales strategies will say to be firm and unmoving in your price, some even go as far as to say to make the customer wait by leaving the room for extended periods of time. A good sales strategy will counter all these tricks and point out that making a customer wait is a good way to increase the unrest in an already tense situation. Being upfront about your limits and the options will make the customers feel that they aren't being lied to and jerked around. Remember, for every customer you're able to squeeze every penny out of, you could have had ten times that amount if you would have simply accommodated each customer and made them feel relaxed. While good sales strategies sometimes call for quality over quantity, this is one of the times where taking a hit in order to increase sales is a good idea, as long as you do so within your means and at a reasonable rate. Bad sales strategies can kill a sale no matter what stage it is in. The number one reason for a customer abandoning a sale isn't because they can't afford the product; it's actually because of the way the salesman is acting. Being conservative and manipulative is a common among a lot of sales strategies but it is often one of the least effective. Being upfront and honest and not forceful will create far more sales and revenues than being shady and tight fisted ever could. No matter how good of a salesman you are, if you employ ineffective sales strategies you won't be making many sales. |
