Why Sales Skills MatterTrying to be a salesman without the proper set of skills is like trying to be a pilot without your license. Like any professional job there is a certain set of skills that one needs to not crash and burn. While it's true that a lot of sales jobs are looked down upon and many scoff when presented with the fact it's a hard job. A great deal of people simply can't work retail and even fewer can do it well. Sales skills truly matter and without them most salespeople fail. They are either fired or quickly become uninterested in the job and move on. Being a salesperson can be rewarding and with the right sales skills can be a great way to support yourself. Like any other industry those with the skills succeed and those without are asked to leave. If you enter the retail industry unprepared you may be in for a shock. It's much harder than simply showing someone where the DVD's are and coming to the workplace with that attitude is the quickest way to lose your job. Having the right sales skills and being able to manage customers on a personal level is important. Many people don't have the personality that makes customers feel welcome and some people are even down right nasty in certain situations. A person with good sales skills will be able to keep their cool when even the most annoying and rude customers walks through the doors. Among other things sales skills allow a good salesperson to adapt to individual personalities so they can relate and even make the job fun when it seems boring. Retail isn't the easiest industry or the most exciting but good sales skills can actually make it quite fun. The second quickest way to be escorted out of the building with poor sales skills is to not sell anything. With customers avoiding you like the plague and helping themselves the few who do put up with your attitude are quickly run out by your poor technical sales skills. Mocking a person's budget or being sneaky and trying to trick them into an expensive purchase is not a good idea and will often times result in the customer walking out on you. Having good sales skills will allow you to not only reel in the customer and allow you to help them but it will help you close deals and make sales. Sales skills will dictate what you suggest and how you handle each customer's individual needs. The retail industry can be stale at times but rewarding if you make each sale personal and feel that satisfaction of helping someone find exactly what they wanted. Sometimes profits have to be set aside to make the job more enjoyable and people with poor sales skills forget that and often burn out and leave. So next time you're walking around in a car dealership or looking for the perfect book remember that the person helping you has a lot harder job than most think and that if you're having a good time that they have mastered good sales skills. Every time you leave an organization mad or frustrated it's most likely attributed to someone with poor sales skills being in the wrong job. Finding a good salesperson with good sales skills is something we all take for granted sometimes and living a day to day life would be a nightmare if people with good sales skills weren't around to help us. It's an important thing to keep in mind when we are shopping or becoming agitated with those helping us. |
